Chipotle closes for lunch Monday, offers raincheck

You're correct, you astute news-follower, you. Stores typically open at 11 a.m. In a bid to regain lost customers and public trust, Chipotle will give away burritos. And, look. I haven't even been to Chipotle in the past ten years, and I still managed to get my butt on the free burrito train.

The burrito empire will be out of commission for four hours on Monday and staff members will take part in a meeting about revised practices for food preparation and health standards.

More than 50,000 Chipotle employees attended the mandatory nationwide meeting by way of Twitter and Periscope.

Chipotle, which has longed promised to source local food, had previously said some of its smaller suppliers wouldn't be able to meet the new safety standards.

Chipotle had been planning its February 8 private company meeting for weeks, which also meant closing down its restaurants until 3 p.m. local time on Monday.

The E. coli outbreaks have sent Chipotle's sales sliding in recent months. Chipotle is trying to make amends.

The promotion tells customers to text the word "raincheck" to 888-222 to get their free burrito.

Chipotle Mexican Grill will close all its restaurants for lunch today. The objective is to prevent a return of the E. coli outbreak that sickened some 500 customers previous year.

The kitchen nightmare caused the Mexican grill chain's stock to plummet as much as 42% with customers, including the New York Rangers, avoiding the once-favored meal.

"We have also changed the way we marinate the steak and chicken, because steak and chicken can harbor unsafe germs like E.coli and salmonella before they are cooked", Moran outlined during the presentation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week ended an investigation into the most recent illness reported to the agency started on December 1.
